THE BACKGROUND

India is witnessing a very big opportunity, its "demographic dividend".

About 54% of India’s 1.2 billion people are under the age of 25 and according to the TeamLease Indian Labor Report 2009 , it is estimated that about 300 million will enter the labor force by 2025, and by then, 25% of the world’s workers will be Indians.

With Knowledge and Skills determing the economic growth of a country, it becomes imperative that India utilises this opportunity to its advantage. With the formation of Prime Minister's National Council on Skill Development and announcement of creating a 500 million skilled workforce by 2022, the stage is set. In India, the workforce comprises of those entering the labour market for the first time (12.8 million annually), those employed in the organized sector (26.0 million) and those working in the unorganized sector (433 million) in 2004-05. The current capacity of the skill development programs is 3.1 million (NSD Policy March 2009) and only 5% of the workforce has relevant employable skills.

The Approach to 12th Five-Year Plan (2013-2017) aim to increase the skilled workforce from the current 12% to 25% by the end of the 12th Plan.
